Delhi government believes in online order deliveries using EVs, announces pilot programme

As if to make good on Niti Aayog's plan to “electrify” all road vehicles in India by 2030, the Delhi government announced its very first electric vehicle freight pilot project under which as many as 1,000 electric vehicles are expected to be used in the next one year for online order deliveries. What that means is that your next order on Amazon.in, Grofers, or even Zomato or Blue Dart Express could be delivered to you on an electric scooter or bicycle.

The announcement was made by Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot during the inauguration of the Urban Mobility Lab workshop in New Delhi earlier today, reports PTI. The workshop, which is set up across selected cities in India jointly by the Rocky Mountain Institute and Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC), is aimed at implementing low-cost yet effective clean e-mobility solutions.

“Over 30 players in last-mile urban delivery from across India have come together in Delhi as part of the Urban Mobility Lab with the goal of piloting up to 1,000 electric vehicles (EVs) for urban deliveries in the city over the next 12 months,” said a Delhi government representative to Gadgets 360 in a statement. The players in the pilot programme currently include Amazon, Grofers, Zomato, Amplus Solar, Areon, Blue Dart Express, Altigreen PL, Hero Electric, Shigan Evoltz, Mahindra Electric, Delta group, Charge-Zone, BSES, Tata Power, and others.

“Delhi aims to become the EV capital of India. Electrification of last-mile delivery vehicles has the potential to kick-start the transition to EVs in the city. We expect this pilot to pave the way for other market segments and are committed to its success,” said Jasmine Shah, the DDC vice chairperson, in a statement to PTI. With any luck, your next package on Amazon.in should leave a lighter carbon footprint on its way to your doorstep.
