WhatsApp tests feature that shares your status to Facebook and other apps

According to Verge, Whatsapp is testing a feature that lets you share your status to other apps. The feature has already started rolling for beta users. Therefore, the users on the latest WhatsApp beta version will start to see a share a button beneath their status. The feature enables you to share your status on apps like Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and Google Photos.

As reported by Verge, the feature does not require apps to be connected. Facebook says it simply operates via Android and iOS sharing API meaning data sharing occurs only between apps on device. There’s no option for automatic sharing of status and users have to manually choose the option to share their status.

The social media giant does not have a good reputation when it comes to data encryption. Questions have been frequently raised on Facebook’s data sharing practices. For instance, Facebook had promised it will not share WhatsApp-generated data with the parent platform. But the company skipped the idea in 2016, announcing that it would start sharing WhatsApp data with Facebook.

The idea of allowing  Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp users to interact via a common backend has already raised eyebrows. We can only hope Facebook’s data sharing practices don’t result in loss of user privacy on its platforms.
