MG ZS EV confirmed to be unveiled in India in December
MG Motor appears to have got off to a strong start in the Indian car market with its Hector SUV. A recent report from India Today claims that the Hector has received a commendable 38,000 orders since its launch in June earlier this year. But MG Motor is not resting on the laurels of its initial market success. According to a report from Autocar India, the British auto marque plans to unveil the ZS EV in India in December this year. The MG ZS EV is an all-electric SUV that will potentially take on the recently launched Hyundai Kona.
According to Autocar India, which received an official statement from MG Motor, the ZS EV SUV will be unveiled in India in December and launched in early 2020. Trial production of the car is currently underway at MG's Halol plant in Gujarat. It will be brought to the country as a CKD (completely knocked down) kit to keep costs low. It will initially be sold only in five cities, including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad.
Currently on sale in the UK, Thailand, and China, the MG ZS EV is expected to be powered by a 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery that's connected to a 150hp electric motor. With this setup, the SUV is expected to deliver a range of 262 kilometres on a single charge. The MG ZS EV should be fully charged in seven hours through a 7kW regular AC charger and forty minutes using a 50kW fast DC charger. MG Motor has tied up with New Delhi-based start-up eChargeBays to help set up EV charging infrastructure in customers' homes.
When launched, the MG ZS EV will go up against the Hyundai Kona in India. The Kona was launched in July this year at a starting price of Rs 25.30 lakh. The Kona, with its 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery, comes with an ARAI-certified range of 452 kilometres. The Hyundai Kona features a 7-inch touchscreen display on its dashboard with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, among other creature comforts. The MG ZS EV is expected to be launched at Rs 22 lakh.
