Coronavirus effect: Wistron Corp speeding up move of iPhone production out of China to India and Vietnam

With the world turned upside down by the coronavirus, it looks like even some of the biggest companies and manufacturers are facing their fair share of problems. Apple being one of them. One of Apple’s manufacturing partners, Winstrol Corp., has said that half the company's capacity would be located outside China in about a year’s time. The company had already started moving production out of China since the trade war between the US and China reached a boiling point last year. The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has sped up the process.

Other companies such as Foxconn, Inventec Corp., and Pegatron Corp could also end up making decisions that could effectively change the supply chain in the long term. Wistron Corp. is actually looking at India as the next manufacturing hub, as well as looking at Vietnam and Mexico as alternatives. The company has set aside a billion dollars for this particular expansion.

Pegatron is also looking at expanding it’s manufacturing sites to other countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and even India as potential countries. The iPhone assembler also said that it has purchased land in northern Taiwan and intends to set up a plant there as well. Even the mighty Foxconn is looking at diversifying their manufacturing sites as well. The folly of placing all your eggs in one basket is now coming back to bite these companies.

Who knows how the virus will affect the world in the coming years but even in just a few short months, the Coronavirus outbreak has shown us that we are teetering on the edge of civilization.
