Google rolls out September security update for Pixel and Nexus devices

In a first major update after it rolled out Android Pie 9.0 to Pixel smartphones, Google has now released the September security patch for all the Pixel and Nexus smartphones. Google says that this latest bulletin has two security patch levels so that Android partners have the flexibility to fix a subset of vulnerabilities that are similar across all Android devices more quickly. There are 24 issues resolved in the September security patch dated 2018-09-01 and 35 for 2018-09-05. Vulnerabilities range from high to critical, and according to Google, the most severe of the issues mentioned in the bulletin  is a critical security vulnerability in Media framework that could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. The tech giant has encouraged its Android partners to fix all issues in this bulletin and use the latest security patch level. “Android partners are notified of all issues at least a month before publication. Source code patches for these issues will be released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository in the next 48 hours. We will revise this bulletin with the AOSP links when they are available,” the company said. Just like some of the previous updates, Google claims that it has not come across any reports of customers being affected by these security issues. The rollout of the update means that devices under the Android One Program will soon be getting this release. Also, Google is expected to release its next generation of Pixel smartphones in October and it is a possibility that the company will officially release the next update with the security patch as well as the Android Pie 9.0 OS for its Android partners. In case of the Pixel smartphones, these devices have already got a stable Android 9 version but the October release may have features like Slices rolled out to them.
