Popular adult content website sheds light on Android version distribution, something Google hasnt done since May

Knowing how many devices are running which version of Android is a good indicator to highlight the adoption of a new OS. It also shows how many OEMs are actively upgrading users to the new OS in a timely fashion. This information has not been updated by Google since May 2019. We do, however, have an unlikely source shedding light on which OS user visited its website. Popular adult content website PornHub has released its annual year in review blog where the website has highlighted a lot of information. One of the pieces of information is about traffic by mobile OS version.

According to PornHub, 48 percent of its traffic came from Android Pie, and 23 percent from Android Oreo. 12 percent from Nougat and 8 percent from Marshmallow. Lollipop users contributed to a mere 5 percent of the traffic. Surprisingly, the latest version of Android, Android 10, contributed to a mere 2 percent of the traffic from Android devices received by the website. Kitkat and Jelly Bean, both contributed 1 percent.

Please note that this isn't a representation of the number of users on the said OS version, but rather those that visited the website. According to Android Police, “the delay was due to an unexpected loss of the source of usage data, and that the monthly updates should have returned to a regular pace”. This means that Android Police was told that the page representing the OS distribution on Android devices would be up and running but it hasn't happened yet.

A lot of smartphone makers have revealed the roadmap of devices being updated to Android 10. You can take a look at all the Samsung devices receiving Android 10 here. Redmi, OnePlus, Nokia and more have also updated their phones to the new version of Android. You can read more about it here.
